About the Spiced Rye Mule
Ginger beer and lime have long been a mule’s foundation, and the Spiced Rye Mule builds on that tradition with Timber Creek’s Florida Black Rye Whiskey standing in for the usual vodka, resulting in a spicy and bold mule with rye’s complexity layered on top of the ginger beer’s own heat. Where a standard mule leans on the ginger beer to carry all the spice, this version gets it from two sources at once, the ginger beer’s bite and the rye’s natural pepperiness, making for a drink with noticeably more depth than the original. That extra depth comes from how the rye is distilled.
Timber Creek’s Florida Black Rye Whiskey is made through the distillery’s PureBlend process, in which the rye grain is distilled and aged in its own individual barrel separately from the rest of the mash bill before being blended back together, preserving the grain’s spicy character rather than softening it. Against a mixer as assertive as ginger beer, that preserved spice is what keeps the whiskey from getting drowned out. To build it, combine the whiskey and lime juice in a copper mug over ice, top with ginger beer, and give it a gentle stir.
Garnish with a lime wedge on the rim. The traditional copper mug isn’t just for looks; it keeps the drink notably colder for longer, which matters for a cocktail meant to be sipped slowly through a warm evening. Spicy food loves a spicy cocktail, and this one pairs especially well with spicy shrimp tacos or a bowl of chili, where the ginger beer’s sweetness and the drink’s overall chill offer some relief from the heat on the plate while the rye keeps pace with it.
It’s a strong choice for a casual dinner party or a game night with a little more kick than usual. Bold as it is, it’s still a full pour of whiskey, so drink it responsibly and know your limit.
