About the Black Rye Manhattan

A rich, warming cocktail with a perfect rye balance, the Black Rye Manhattan takes the classic Manhattan template, whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, and builds it around Timber Creek’s Florida Black Rye Whiskey instead of the usual bourbon or blended rye. The result trades some of a traditional Manhattan’s caramel sweetness for a spicier, more peppery backbone, while still keeping the drink’s signature richness and depth intact. It’s a Manhattan for people who want their rye to be unmistakably present rather than smoothed over.

That unmistakable presence comes straight from how the whiskey is distilled. Florida Black Rye Whiskey is made through Timber Creek’s proprietary PureBlend process, in which the rye grain is distilled and aged in its own individual barrel separately from the rest of the mash bill before being blended back together by component. That separation keeps the rye’s natural spice sharp and distinct, which matters enormously in a stirred, three ingredient cocktail like this one, where the whiskey’s character is essentially the whole point of the drink.

To build it, stir the whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters together with ice for about thirty seconds, enough to properly chill and lightly dilute the mixture, then strain into a chilled coupe glass. Finish with a good quality cocktail cherry dropped into the glass. As with any Manhattan, stirring rather than shaking is non negotiable; it keeps the texture clear and silky instead of cloudy and over diluted.

This cocktail calls for equally substantial food. Steak frites or roasted root vegetables both bring enough richness and earthiness to stand up to the rye’s spice and the drink’s overall weight, making it a strong pairing for a cold weather dinner or a special occasion meal where the cocktail is meant to be part of the main event. Rich and spirit forward, this one rewards a slow pace, so enjoy it in moderation and drink responsibly.
